GUEST SPEAKER Des Parker has been involved in the newspaper industry for 67 years. He started off with a newspaper round that commenced at 5.00 a.m. He then had a short round at lunch time followed by another round in the afternoon. He progressed to selling papers on the wharf but needed Customs approval to do so. He purchased a round for 3,900 pounds and was the victim of larceny from a future Rotarian in the vicinity of the Risdon Hotel. Des became Circulation Manager at the Recorder where 2800 newspapers had to be hand-rolled, often while the roller was driving around town, steering with his knees. This method of delivery brought a few close shaves for Des but he survived and forged a memorable career with the Recorder. Des' interest in local history and photography began when he wondered about the origins of various monuments in parks around the city. Des began what was to become an iconic photographic history of Port Pirie, which continues to this day. The treasure trove of memories was almost lost in 1985 when the paper's owners ordered the disposal of all negatives. Des took custody of the negatives, thus saving an irreplaceable piece of Pirie history. He organised his collection into groups of early history, modern history and sport. He is particularly interested in sport and still takes 80 to 90 photos every weekend at various sporting venues. Unfortunately, Des has no influence over which photos are published. He laments modern methods of reporting compared to the standards of the 1940's when his career began. Rotarians enjoyed viewing a sample of Des' huge collection.
PRESIDENT A quote from a recent edition of Gladstone High School's newsletter: "Ainsley Bosch and Daniel Zander would like to thank the Rotary Club of Port Pirie and Geoff Brock for their generous sponsorship."
